LAREDO, Texas — A Laredo man was killed and five police officers were injured in an exchange of gunfire as the officers responded to a domestic disturbance Monday.
Laredo police responded to a report of gunfire in a residential area, and while in the vicinty received a domestic disturbance call. Two officers were shot and three were struck by shrapnel in an exchange of gunfire after they entered the house, officers said. The suspected gunman was fatally wounded.
Guadalupe Ricardo Tenorio, 41, later died at Laredo Medical Center, though police spokesman Joe Baeza said it's unclear whether his wound was a result of police gunfire or was self-inflicted.
Officer Rodolfo "Rudy" Guerrero, 26, was transported to a San Antonio hospital where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds to the arm and leg. Officer Priscilla Smith, 23, underwent surgery in Laredo for a wound to the arm. The remaining three injured officers were treated for minor injuries and released.
The domestic disturbance set off a lockdown at nearby schools, even though officials said no campus was in danger.
Some area parents panicked when rumors suggested the shooting took place on a school campus. Although schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution, the incident was several blocks from nearby schools, Baeza said.
