ARLINGTON, Va. — Police fatally shot a man in a northern Virginia apartment building Tuesday morning after they heard screaming upon arrival for a domestic-disturbance call, authorities said. Two officers were injured.

Officers arrived at the building in Arlington about 11 a.m. and confronted a man, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. The man who was shot died after being taken to a hospital.

Two officers who responded to the call suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One officer was shot by a stun gun, and the other suffered a serious facial laceration, authorities said. A woman also suffered minor injuries.

Both officers were taken to a hospital, and one was undergoing surgery, according to a tweet on the Police Department’s Twitter account.

Michael McLaughlin, a next-door neighbor, said he knew the man who was shot and the man had lived there for several years helping take care of his mother. “People in the neighborhood know he’s nuts, but I’m not a mental health expert,” McLaughlin said.

He said that while the man acted strangely, he never felt threatened by him or perceived him as dangerous.

Several hours after the shooting, a large police presence remained in the neighborhood. Officers were using what looked like surveying equipment to take measurements outside the home.

Sternbeck said the investigation is continuing and that the sequence in which the officers and man sustained their injuries is not yet clear.

Sternbeck said the woman who sustained the minor injuries was older than the man who died, but he did not know her exact age.

The apartment complex is in a working-class neighborhood of Arlington, south of the city’s busy Ballston District.
