BALTIMORE — Two police officers assigned to a U.S. Marshals task force, one from Baltimore City and one from Baltimore County, were shot in Northeast Baltimore on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

David Lutz, a spokesman for the Marshals Service, said the two officers were a part of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, and were among a group of officers attempting to arrest a man wanted in a Pennsylvania attempted murder. Lutz said the suspect was killed. He did not name or provide additional details about the suspect.

The officers are being treated at Maryland Shock Trauma. One officer was injured in the leg and the other in the stomach, Lutz said in an email.

Lutz said the Marshals deputizes officers from local agencies, including the city and county, as part of the local task force.

The U.S. Marshals office is a federal agency with duties that include courthouse security, fugitive apprehension, prisoner transport, and witness security.

Officers were called to Radecke and Cedonia avenues in the Frankford neighborhood shortly after noon.

Neighbors at the scene said a suspect was shooting back at officers from inside an apartment building. There appeared to be a body under the sheet at the scene.

Agents from the Baltimore office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were assisting at the scene.

A Baltimore County police spokeswoman said the department is still seeking information.

There was a large police presence around Shock Trauma, and police blocked off West Lombard Street in the area. Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young and Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt were among those at the hospital.
