ROSEBURG, Ore. — Police are trying to identify the driver involved in a shootout that ended with a stolen car catching fire.
According to local news station CBS4 News, police were responding to reports of a car that had been stolen the week before.
Police say the driver opened fire at officers when they pursued him through a ranch. Officers returned fire, with several cows quickly dispersing from the area.
Minutes later, the gunfire ended and the car burst into flames.
The shootout was captured by a bystander and her husband while they were on their way to dinner.
The bystander, Julie McCartt, told news sources that she didn’t see anyone leave the car.
“Law enforcement later confirmed the presence of human remains in the vehicle,” authorities said.
Multiple guns and some ammunition were inside the vehicle, police report.
No officers were injured during the shooting and those involved were placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
