Man shot dead by N.Y. police in his condo
SOUTHEAST, N.Y.- State Police say the Putnam County man shot dead at his home after brandishing a pistol Saturday night was intoxicated.
Police say 51-year-old Gary Kressman may have become agitated when troopers asked him about vandalism to the ooutside of his condo unit.
Kressman was taken to Danbury Hospital Center pronounced dead.
Police say he was intoxicated and behaving irrationally.
Troopers, joined by Putnam County Sheriff's deputies, responded at 6:15 Saturday evening and found Kressman locked in an upstairs bathroom. Police say Kressman exited the bathroom with a pistol and was shot.
Neighbors said they heard two gunshots around 6:45 pm and then saw police remove what appeared to be a shotgun from the home. Police say Kressman did not fire at police.
Putnam County District Attorney Kevin Wright declined to identify the trooper involved in the shooting. Neighbors told the Journal News that Kressman called his parents in Yonkers, from whom he was estranged, asking for help.
Family members called 911 after finding Kressman intoxicated and making suicidal statements.
The exterior of Kressman's unit at the Fieldstone Pond Condos was vandalized twice in the last two weeks.
The management said the damage totaled 25-hundred dollars. One condo boarc manager told the Journal News that Kressman was under suspicion of doing the damage.
