Ala. cop shoots, kills man who tried to assault him

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Authorities in Alabama say a Tuscaloosa police officer has shot and killed a man who attempted to assault the officer.
Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Brad Mason tells local media that 50-year-old Jeffory Ray Tevis was shot after an altercation with an officer Thursday evening.
Police say the officer, who was responding to a potential assault call at an apartment, initially used a stun gun on Tevis but drew a firearm after the man kept trying to assault the officer.
Mason says Tevis, who is white, died at the scene. The officer, whose race wasn't released by police, was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Police have said Tevis was covered in blood when officers went to the apartment. Authorities say they subsequently found no evidence Tevis was assaulted by anyone.
