APOPKA, Fla. — An off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday shot a man who was trying to break into her house near Apopka with an ax, according to Sheriff John Mina.

The deputy, who has been on the force for two years, was at home with her children when the man started trying to break down the door with an ax around 5:30 p.m. in the Rolling Oak subdivision. The man was able to get inside the home where the deputy shot him several times, Mina said.

The deputy then struggled with the suspect. She handcuffed the intruder and detained him until other deputies, who were in the area investigating a rash of similar attempted burglaries, arrived.

Mina said the suspect, a man in his 30s, will be charged with armed burglary, but other charges may be forthcoming.

“This could’ve happened to anyone, but our deputies are trained to protect themselves (and) protect our communities,” Mina said.
