BALTIMORE — Authorities say a Baltimore school police officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect in a shooting he had just witnessed.

Media outlets report that city schools spokeswoman Karen Parks says the officer was in his car Wednesday morning when he witnessed a shooting a few blocks from city schools in west Baltimore. The officer got out to chase the suspect and that's when Parks says the suspect shot at the officer and the officer returned fire.

Parks says neither was struck by the gunfire, but the suspect was taken into custody.

City police spokesman Lt. Jarron Jackson says the department is launching two investigations, into the initial shooting and the officer's firing at the suspect.
