CINCINNATI — Police in Cincinnati shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at himself and officers responding to the scene.

Cincinnati.com reports officers received calls Sunday of a suicidal man when the standoff occurred.

37-year-old Christopher Mitchell came out of a residence with a .22-caliber gun to his head as officers formed a perimeter around the house, according to police.

Officers Robert Lind and Scott McManis opened fire when Mitchell raised his gun at them — firing one round from a shotgun and three from a 9mm.

Mitchell had reportedly threatened a friend who had come over earlier in the day and had expressed suicidal thoughts. He had also put a gun against his head and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire.

Asst. Chief Paul Humphries credits the body camera footage for supporting the statements of those at the scene.

“I will take every bit of information that gets us to the truth. Witnesses that we interviewed basically had the same story, but when you got the video, that’s clear cut evidence,” Humphries said.

Police in Cincinnati are currently testing two types of body cameras. This is the first shooting the department has captured with the technology, according to the report.
