HARTFORD, Conn. — Three people are in custody after a police chase that started in Massachusetts ended on I-91 southbound in Hartford, state police said. No injuries were reported, but the highway was briefly closed in Hartford.
Ian James, 34, of Herald Street in Hartford, who was driving the car, faces 12 charges, including reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, having weapons in a vehicle and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was held in lieu of $250,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Enfield on Wednesday.
The other two man had not been identified on Tuesday night.
State police said troopers attempted to box the vehicle in during the chase but that James began ramming the cruisers, hitting as many as five Connecticut police vehicles and others from Massachusetts. A Massachusetts police helicopter was brought in for the chase, too.
Sgt. John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department said the chase began in Springfield just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle involved in the chase had been involved in “several assaults by means of a firearm” on Friday, Delaney said.
An off-duty officer spotted the car Tuesday morning and alerted officers. When an officer located the car and attempted to pull it over, the vehicle fled onto I-91, Delaney said. One gun was recovered from the vehicle when it was stopped on the highway in Hartford, he said.
The highway was closed in Hartford about 11:23 a.m., according to the Department of Transportation. It reopened about an hour later. Traffic backed up on I-91 south as vehicles slowly made their way off the highway until clogged city streets. Hartford police were stationed at intersections near the Jennings Road exit in an attempt to move traffic through the city quickly.
Roughly a dozen police and other emergency vehicles were on the highway in the area flanking the fleeing vehicle.
