PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Jackson County has named the new Adult Detention Center for Deputy Bruce W. Evans, killed in the line of duty 15 years ago.
The Board of Supervisors said Evans is the only Jackson County deputy they know of who was killed in the line of duty.
He was killed in July 2000, when hit by a George County suspect who was stopped at a roadblock while fleeing the law.
Evans’ wife, Kristi, daughter Blake Evans, 23, and son Tyler Evans, 20, attended the Board of Supervisors meeting Monday.
“This is a huge honor,” Blake Evans told the board. She said it has been a long, hard road for her family since her father’s death.
“Every day we’re still proud of our dad,” Blake Evans said. “We’re glad Jackson County is still remembering him too.”
Jail update
The board also got an update on the new jail, which is expected to have a final price tag of $27.5 million.
Contractors are doing the final punch lists, the open house and ribbon cutting will be 10 a.m. on Oct. 29 with the jail to remain open for the public to tour until 3 p.m.
All major construction is complete, staff is undergoing equipment training, and the county staff is installing computers this week for the high-tech jail.
The county plans to begin putting inmates in the jail at the end of November.
