DES MOINES, Iowa — Four Des Moines police officers made a daring rescue early Tuesday when a group of children came flying for help — literally.
Three kids were tossed out of a third-floor apartment window to escape a blaze when smoke blocked firefighters from getting to them, the Des Moines Police Department said online.
The apartment caught fire around 3:15 a.m., according to the fire department.
“Before we had arrived, there were people in one of the apartments tossing down their kids. Police department caught three of them and then when fire crews arrived, they pulled one or two more out,” Lt. Rick Thomas told WHO.
Officials said that no one was harmed in the blaze and residents from the first and second floor had already been allowed back inside to retrieve their belongings, but not to stay.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
