5-year-old honorary firefighter, police officer loses battle with brain cancer

A last call went out in honor of Peyton Michael Dennis, ending with, “Rest in peace to our friend, we have the watch from here”

IONIA, Mich. — Peyton Michael Dennis, a 5-year-old honorary firefighter and police officer for the city of Ionia, died after a long battle with brain cancer on Dec. 14.

Dennis’ funeral was held on Dec. 19, WILX 10 reported, and attendees dressed in blue, his favorite color, to honor him.

“It is with a heavy heart we share that Ionia’s youngest honorary officer has passed away after a very brave battle with cancer,” a statement from the Ionia Department of Public Safety read. “Thank you Ofc. Peyton for your service.”

Ionia County Central Dispatch sent out a last call for Dennis.

“Peyton, your honor, courage and bravery will love on in all of us. Rest in peace to our friend, we have the watch from here.“
