PINETOP-LAKESIDE, Ariz. — An officer was shot and killed early Monday after responding to reports of shots fired near a casino.

According to AZ Family, 26-year-old White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood responded to the call near the Hon-Dah Resort around 1 a.m. Monday and located the suspect, who “immediately engaged in a violent, physical altercation with the officer, during which the officer was shot,” said Brian Swanty, chief deputy for the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect fled and was shot and killed shortly after by another officer. No one else was injured. The investigation is ongoing.

Kellywood served with the department for about nine months. Prior to that he served as a detention officer for the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his wife and two children.

“Our brave tribal law enforcement officers sometimes give all to keep all Tribal Communities safe. Prayers are with the officer’s family and the entire White Mountain Apache Tribe,” Governor of the Gila River Indian Community Stephen Roe Lewis wrote in a Facebook post.
