YUCAIPA, Calif. Motorists traveling through the San Bernardino Mountains along Highway 38 will now see memorial signs paying tribute to fallen San Bernardino County sheriff’s Deputy Jeremiah MacKay.

One of the green and white “Detective Jeremiah MacKay Memorial Highway” signs was unveiled at Yucaipa Community Park during a gathering of law enforcement and political leaders Wednesday morning.

“Let this stretch of highway serve as a permanent sign of the gratitude, the deep gratitude of the people you serve,” said 33rd District Assemblyman Tim Donnelly.

The two signs will sit at mile markers 24 and 29, a path through Angelus Oaks used by deputies to reach the shootout where MacKay was killed.

Fired Los Angeles Police Department officer Christopher Dorner shot and killed MacKay during a firefight in the San Bernardino Mountains community of Seven Oaks on Feb. 12, 2013. The slaying occurred during Dorner’s 10-day rampage in Southern California in protest of his 2008 firing from the LAPD. He killed an Irvine couple and a Riverside police officer before taking refuge in the mountains.

There, he abducted a Big Bear Lake couple, stole their SUV and led authorities on a vehicle chase into Seven Oaks, where the standoff ensued and ended with Dorner taking his own life.

Dorner also shot and seriously wounded Riverside police Officer Andrew Tachias and San Bernardino County sheriff’s Deputy Alex Collins.
