Calling all police poets! PoliceOne’s new column highlights some of the inspirational, moving and funny poems authored by our readers.

This month’s poem – written to be sung to the tune of Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” – is by Officer Jeff Stagg of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

Officer Stagg has served as a negotiator on IMPD’s Hostage-Crisis Negotiation Team for 24 years and has been an Honor Guard “TAPS” bugler for the past 31 years. He wrote this poem after what has been a trying few weeks for law enforcement where several officers have been shot and killed, many wounded, and rank and file officers taking criticism for “doing their jobs.”

“YOU’VE GOT THE GOOD COPS!”

You say, ‘Where have all the good COPS gone?’

Hey, they’ve never left the scenes,

Hittin’ your streets every night and day

Wearin’ blue, black, brown and green.

Where are COPS when things get bad?

They’ll be the first to run inside,

They’re men and women who know what’s what,

On this tough and dangerous ride.

These are your good COPS,

They will always respond, when most people take flight,

These gals who’ve got to be strong and guys who’ve got to be fast,

And they all train to stay in the fight!

You’re blessed with good COPS,

They’ll be there when it’s cold, when it’s hot, when it’s mean.

You’ll ask for them to give sweat and blood,

And they will, this unbreakable TEAM!

They’ll be your heroes.
