TULSA, Okla. — One of two police officers who were shot and critically wounded during a traffic stop Monday morning has passed away.

Both officers were shot multiple times by the suspect, 32-year-old David Ware. Tulsa police said the officers were shot in the head and underwent surgery.

Ware allegedly shot them during an early morning traffic stop before fleeing the scene. He led police on a seven-hour manhunt before he was taken into custody just before 11 a.m.

Police say the two officers were trying to get Ware out of the vehicle, with one of them deploying a Taser and pepper spray.

“When they were able to get the driver out of the vehicle, the driver produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds,” Police Chief Wendell Franklin said.

The motive for the shooting isn’t clear. Capt. Richard Meulenberg said the suspect didn’t have a known bias toward police.

Johnson leaves behind his wife and two young sons, the department said.
