Job Description

Under direction, a Police Officer patrols an assigned area by car, motorcycle or foot to prevent crime and maintain law and order; responds to emergencies; investigates crimes and unusual or suspicious conditions; makes arrests; prepares police reports; issues citations and regulates traffic; prepares traffic collision reports; represents the Police Department in community relations and public information projects or programs including making presentations at schools; participates in the in-service training of police personnel; prepares evidence and appears in court; administers first aid and provides assistance to injured persons; and performs related duties as assigned.

Additional Information

The Police Trainee is a non-sworn, full time, temporary classification designed to be used while an individual is attending a 22-week P.O.S.T.-approved Basic Police Academy. Upon successful completion of the Basic Police Academy and other pre-employment background requirements, Police Trainees may be sworn in as full-time Police Officers, with full benefits, serving an 18-month probationary work test period.

Graduation from high school (or GED or Proficiency Certificate) and possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment; vision must be at least 20/100 correctable to 20/30 and free from color blindness. Must be U.S. Citizen or a permanent resident (permanent residents must become a U.S. Citizen within 3 years of appointment). Conviction of any felony offense, certain misdemeanor offenses, or any offense reflecting lack of character, judgement, or morals, or any other than honorable military discharge may be cause for disqualification. Per State Law, candidates must be free from any emotional, mental, or physical condition, including weight, which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. Candidates may be required to participate in a thorough background examination which includes a polygraph test.
