Essential Elements of Position:
The police officers on a university campus primarily perform community oriented policing. Our officers are highly interactive with the student population as many students are away from home for the first time and seek guidance and direction from our officers.
The role is one of assistance and enforcement, and the officers are viewed as problem solvers. We look for leadership potential and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to make presentations and relate to our student population. The shift is comprised of foot patrols with significant interaction with the residential population. The officers provide a police presence that promotes the safety and security of all members of the university community. This is an essential personnel position.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Work involves patrolling (by foot and vehicle) grounds and buildings to ensure safety and enforce University, Commonwealth and Federal regulations.
Directing and controlling traffic and parking.
Investigating crimes and accidents.
Cooperating with local, state and other police authorities.
Preparing daily reports.
Work is performed with little direct supervision and reviewed by a superior through personal inspection and review of reports.
Applicant must possess these skills, knowledge, and abilities or to be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Knowledge of Commonwealth laws, rules and regulations governing motor vehicle operation and personal conduct for employees and visitors at Commonwealth facilities.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions appropriate to responsibilities assigned as a law enforcement officer.
Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine proper course of action.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Minimum Experience and Training: One year of police experience or any equivalent experience or training. Law enforcement experience in a college setting is preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle operator's license. Ability to meet such qualifications regarding strength, agility and health as may be required. Current CPR, Infant CPR and First Aid certifications are required prior to offer of employment.
Receipt of the Basic Police Commission with arrest powers, granted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under provisions of Act 120 is required. Documentation must be provided at interview.
Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the University Firearms Qualification Requirements, psychological review as required, and commissioning by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Finalist must communicate well and successfully complete an interview.
