DEFINITION: Under general direction, to collect, analyze, prepare and disseminate information regarding criminal activity and to perform other technical, analytical, administrative and related work in the Police Department as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: General supervision is provided by the Patrol and Investigations Commander.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Plan, coordinate, supervise and participate in the daily operations of the Crime Analysis Unit; develop and maintain manual and automated crime information systems; collect and analyze data on crime occurrences; develop reports on trends, series and patterns of criminal activity; present reports to Police Department Staff; assist in the coordination of Police activities with other City Departments and outside agencies; prepare and answer routine correspondence; may be required to input crime data into Unit computer system; work independently to perform a variety of technical and routine administrative work.
Knowledge of: Principles of data collection, analysis and evaluation methodology; experience in implementing the crime analysis using Crime View software is a plus; global information systems (GIS); oral and written presentation techniques; research evaluation, methodology and statistics; police operations and procedures.
Ability to: Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing; make accurate decisions based on factual and deductive information; interpret tables, charts and graphs and to create same for presentation to others; analyze data and apply statistical methods; establish and maintain effective working relationships with Police Department staff and the public; supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.
Experience: Two years of experience in the collection, analysis and presentation of complex crime data in a law enforcement setting.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminology, administration of justice, public administration, behavioral science or related field with course work in statistical analysis. An Associate's Degree in the above field and two years of experience in the collection, analysis and presentation of complex crime date in a law enforcement setting may be substituted for the required education and experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
Tools and Equipment Used: Requires frequent use of personal computer, including word processing, database and spreadsheet programs; calculator, telephone, copy and fax machines.
