Job Description

Position Summary: Under the general direction of the shift supervisor, performs a full range of police duties necessary to enforce laws and ordinances. Investigates complaints, maintains order, aids individuals, and identifies criminal offenders. Identifies law enforcement problems, resolves conflicts, and provides other police services to the public as necessary. Decisions within areas of responsibility are made independently. Supervision received is general. There is frequent interaction with the general public. Work involves an element of personal danger and officers must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergency situations. Must work a variety of shift schedules to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Essential Functions: • Observes, detects, and apprehends violators of traffic and other laws and ordinances. • Observes and takes appropriate actions regarding physical hazards and illegal criminal activities. • Responds to emergency calls and assists fire and EMS services as necessary. • Responds to calls for service from citizens. • Conducts investigations of incidents occurring on the shift. • Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects. • Determines appropriate action to be taken at each incident. • Completes detailed, accurate reports of all activities. • Completes departmental forms, logs, and summaries related to the processing of evidence. • Provides competent, credible court testimony. Other Functions: • Reviews necessary reports and documentation of incidents. • Performs other such duties as assigned. • Remains available for emergency call out at any time of the day or night. Education and/or Experience Requirements: • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalency. • Associate degree in police science, sociology or related field preferred. • Must meet the minimum requirements as established by the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards Board. • Previous experience dealing with the general public preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and civil service; content, intent and application of Wyoming criminal law and Town ordinances; adult and juvenile judicial procedures; civil and constitutional laws; Departmental policies and procedures; laws of arrest and search and seizure; techniques of interview and interrogation; criminal case preparation; crime scene management. • Ability to identify and analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions and make sound judgments. • Ability to move quickly and forcefully in response to unexpected situations. • Ability to maneuver and work in a variety of conditions. • Ability to operate patrol vehicles in emergency mode. • Ability to successfully pass the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy physical fitness test at the time of hire. • Knowledge and experience in the utilization of technical equipment including computers, cameras, and other police equipment. • Proficiency in the use of computers and software used by the department. • Ability to render credible testimony in a court of law. • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a variety of people including co-workers, other professionals, appointed and elected officials, and the general public. • Ability to obtain valid Wyoming Driver License prior to employment. Necessary Special Requirements: • Must have no felony record. Must pass an in depth background investigation, psychological examination, physical fitness evaluation, written and oral examinations. • Must complete the current requirements of a Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training basic training course within one year of initial employment. Veteran officers from outside the state of Wyoming may qualify for the POST Challenge Course. Salary: • Entry level $3,266/mo. • Lateral commensurate with experience.
