This is senior level administrative and supervisory police work within the UNT Police Department. The duties of this position are varied and involve the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment. The Captain manages and is accountable for effective administration of the following assigned units: training, crime prevention, emergency preparedness, internal affairs, and police coordination and planning for special events. The Captain will report to the Chief of Police and will serve as command officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police.
The successful candidate will possess eight years experience as a commissioned police officer with a minimum of three years of prior supervisory experience of sworn police personnel in a law enforcement setting; active peace officer license in the State of Texas or ability to attain same within six months of employment through Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and education (TCLEOSE) lateral entry program; bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business or related field.
Job Description The Police Captain will carry out responsibilities which will include, but are not limited to: managing department training programs and services for sworn and civilian personnel; planning, organizing, coordinating, and assigning personnel to NCAA Division I Athletic events; managing police personnel assigned to UNT Dallas Campus and serving as police liaison to University Center @ Dallas, and UNT Law School; and maintaining appropriate liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, courts, university, governmental and other government officials.

Minimum Qualifications The successful candidate will possess any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
* Thorough knowledge of Police Department policy and functions relating to University activities, buildings and grounds, and vehicle regulations. * Thorough knowledge of civil and criminal law, laws of arrest, rules of evidence, search and seizure, and of special police methods. * Skill in the use of communications equipment, firearms and other specialized items of police equipment. * Ability to make sound and prompt decisions within limits of laws, regulations and Police Department policy. * Thorough knowledge of modern principles, practices, equipment and techniques of police administration, organization and operation. * Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, subordinates, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public. * Knowledge of safety and security precautions consistent with the law enforcement/security professions. * Employees in this class must also meet and maintain the requirements for licensure and continuing licensure as a police officer established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE). * Employees in this class will be expected to be on-call as scheduled and will be required to work a flexible schedule as the needs of the department or position responsibilities dictate.
Preferred Qualifications The ideal candidate will preferably possess the following qualifications:
* Prior supervisory/management experience in a university or college law enforcement agency; * Licensure as a Police Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, or other job-related area; * Advanced or Master Peace Officer License from TCLEOSE or out-of-state equivalent demonstrating continuing skill/career development as a police officer. * Knowledge/experience in a CALEA accredited agency preferred.
