Job Description

Deputy Sheriff Trainee (DST) is an entry level non-sworn training position. DST’s are required to attend a paid 26-week Peace Officer Standards and Training. Certified Sheriff’s Training Academy, plus a 2-week Jail Academy. In the Academy, DST’s will develop the minimum skills required for entry into a law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff. The DST will be trained in California Criminal and Civil Law and the Orange County Sheriff Department’s Policies and Procedures. Promotion to Deputy Sheriff I is based on satisfactory evaluations, graduation from the Academy, and Academy Staff recommendations. Upon successful completion of the Sheriff’s Training Academy, DST’s become certified sworn peace officers of the State of California and the County of Orange. Laterals/Deputy Sheriff will be required to perform all classes of law enforcement work including, but not limited to, under supervision, guard and supervise prisoners in correctional and court facilities.

  • Entry Level Rate: $30.56 hourly
  • Academy Graduate Rate: $32.24 hourly
  • Lateral Transfer Rate: Department attempts to establish a rate comparable to the applicant’s previous rate

Job Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Background: Must have no felony convictions as a juvenile or adult and cannot currently be on any form of probation AND must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Sheriff-Coroner
  • Must not have any domestic violence convictions and cannot currently be the subject of a domestic violence restraining order
  • Driver's License: Must possess a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher by date of appointment
