A 911 Dispatcher works on a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The SDPD Dispatch Center is the primary answering point (PSAP) for all 911 and non-emergency calls from the City of San Diego. Dispatchers must quickly ascertain the nature and extent of the request, the priority of the problem, and the need for dispatching police units. All appropriate information is entered promptly and accurately into the CAD system and transmitted to the radio dispatcher. Dispatchers work 10 hours per shift, 4 days a week, with varying shifts. Dispatchers may answer 75-150 calls a day and are required to stay at their workstations for long periods of time. Every applicant must take a computerized, simulated dispatcher test to determine the applicant's computer and data-entry skill level.
A career as a Dispatcher offers many satisfying and rewarding opportunities to help others and make a contribution to public safety. This challenging, fast-paced work requires quick thinking and problem solving abilities, and excellent public relations skills.
