Coronado Police Officers perform general police work in the prevention of crime and the enforcement of law and order. The incumbent performs traffic enforcement control and carries out special assignments in specialized phases of police and emergency work. Incumbents generally drive a police vehicle in carrying out duties but may be assigned to special details as needs arise. Police officers may be called upon to establish order in extreme conditions and in conditions of emergency.
The ideal candidate will be a community service-oriented individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to exercise a high degree of discretion, trust, and confidence performing skilled police work. The ideal candidate will also possess a strong ability to exercise considerable judgement and initiative to partner with the community to identify and resolve issues of concern, and maintain peace, safety, and order.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Positions in this class may be hired based on one of the following separate and distinct backgrounds and experiences.
Lateral Entry: Applicant must possess a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate, and have been employed as a sworn full-time Peace Officer as defined in Section 830.1, 830.2 (a, b, c, d), 830.32, or 830.33 of the California Penal Code with a California law enforcement agency within two (2) years from the date of offer of employment; or possess a Basic Course Waiver; or have completed the P.O.S.T. requalification course as described in P.O.S.T. regulations under Title 11, Division 2, Section 1008 of the California Code of Regulations. Out-of-state applicants must have been employed as a sworn Police officer within two years from the date of the offer of employment.
Police Academy Graduates: Applicant must be in the final phase of an Accredited P.O.S.T. Academy at time of application. Candidates must have successfully completed the academy and possess an Academy P.O.S.T. Certificate prior to an offer of employment.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. Possession of a current First Aid Certificate, CPR Certificate, and Chemical Agent Certificate. For Lateral Entry Applicants only: Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate.

Copies of licenses and/or certificates MUST be attached to the application for consideration. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of relevant education, training, and experience.
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be emailed an invitation to participate in in a pre-orientation information session. The most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the next phase of the exam process, which will consist of an oral panel interview (100%). Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list for a period of at least six months. Candidates must obtain a score of 100% in all components of the examination in order to pass and be placed on the eligibility list. Applicants will be notified via email of their status.
All appointments are subject to successful completion of a thorough background investigation, computerized voice stress analyzer (CVSA), a medical and psychological examination.
