Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is searching for an Operation Sergeant who will lead a shift of Police and Community Service Officers and manages the work of these direct reports. The Sergeant is a working supervisor who also performs the full scope of officer responsibilities. The Sergeant assures that all shift duties are completed in accordance with Department goals by providing clear direction and respectful communication to the team, the OHSU community and its customers. The Sergeant is responsible for communicating management expectations and OHSU Police culture and training to all Police and Community Service Officers and ensuring their actions are consistent therewith. Job duties include training, managing, monitoring, evaluating, coaching and disciplining employees. The Sergeant supports the University’s mission and goals, and is expected to exercise authority in support of OHSU in a manner consistent with the strategic plan and policies befitting of the University’s service oriented and complex culture.
Qualifications: Education: Must possess High School diploma or equivalent, minimum of three years of police officer experience AND at least one year of law enforcement first line supervisor or sergeant work experience, performing supervisory duties, such as performance evaluations, coaching/ counseling, disciplinary action, direction of work, etc. OR minimum of three years of OHSU Public Safety experience AND be currently certified as an Oregon Police Officer.
Prefered: completion of college level coursework in criminal justice, public administration, psychology or related subjects.
Job Related Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Successful passing of medical, psychological testing and thorough background check.
United States citizenship
Intermediate level of proficiency with computer programs and applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, CAD system, etc.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills and professionalism
Demonstrated experience working with individuals with diverse and cultural backgrounds
Cultural competency and ability to accept and relate to diverse populations.
o Includes the ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures/ethnic backgrounds. Cultural competence includes the awareness of one’s own cultural worldview, attitude towards cultural differences, knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and cross-cultural skills. Must have the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and make quick, sound decisions.
Ability to learn Oregon Revised Statues. Understanding and application of Federal Law.
Strong interpersonal communication skills for working professionally and courteously with all customers, including patients.
o Experience working with patients including aging and mentally ill population.
o Multilingual and/or Bilingual proficiency through speaking, writing or signing. Spanish and Russian preferable.
Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:
Possession of DPSST Basic Police Officer certification or other police certification if from out of state
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with OHSU policy
CPR and FirstAid certification within six months of hire
OHSU required training within 12 months of hire
o Completion of DPSST Supervisory certificate or equivalent if from out of state
o Completion of DPSST Supervision Course and/or Oregon DPSST Supervisory Certificate or equivalent
