Qualifications include

  • Be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED; a college degree is preferred.
  • Be free of any felony or other serious criminal background.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Be a registered voter in his/her current county/city of residence.
  • Be of good moral character.

APPLICATION PROCESS

All applicants who qualify for the academy will be scheduled for a civil service exam. Those who pass the civil service exam will go through a rigorous background investigation and be required to meet a high standard of physical fitness requirements. The academy is 17 weeks long.

After successful completion of the selection process, the Hattiesburg Police Officer Training Academy, Field Training Officers program, and twelve (12) months of probation, the responsibilities will be:

  • The protection of life and property through the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • The investigation of crimes against persons and property
  • The duties of a patrol officer for the City of Hattiesburg

SALARY & BENEFITS

The starting salary for a Hattiesburg Police Officer is between $35,000 and $38,000 depending on education. The salary for a recruit during a Recruit Class is $25,000, with a change in salary effective upon graduation.

  • 1.5-mile run
  • Push-ups
  • Illinois Agility Run
