The City of Saint Paul, Alaska, is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer (Multidisciplinary). This is a full-time, salaried, contractual position with full benefits including, but not limited to, enrollment in the Alaska Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Supplemental Annuity Plan (SBS-AP), medical insurance, annual leave, sick leave, partially subsidized housing and vehicle.
Police officers perform general duty commissioned law enforcement work in the protection of life, property and preservation of peace through the enforcement of laws, regulations, and city ordinances. This position works under the supervision of the Police Chief/Director of Public Safety, or delegated supervisory officer. This position involves extensive contact with the public and contact with all entities on Saint Paul Island and other law enforcement agencies. The incumbents serve as “all-hazards” responders, expected to tackle a variety of law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical, search and rescue and emergency management tasks, as assigned. Police officers are expected to obtain and maintain a pre-hospital care provider rating at Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) or higher.
Other routine duties include proactive patrol to preserve the peace, prevent criminal activity, enforcing all Federal, State, and local laws. Police officers monitor, screen and respond to all calls for service including, but not limited to, disturbances, suspicious activities, citizens assist, and reported criminal activity. They complete written reports, criminal complaints and investigate and prepare criminal cases for prosecution. They testify in court when necessary. Police officers respond to all emergency scenes, and situations, and perform all necessary actions to protect the public from danger.
High School diploma or equivalent, be Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) certified, or certifiable within 14 months from date of hire. Applicant must possess a valid Alaska driver’s license, or have the ability to acquire one within 30 days of hire. Applicant must be in good physical condition, willing to submit to an extensive background investigation which may include a post-offer psychological assessment, polygraph examination and a medical/drug screening. Prior police/security/military experience preferred. Lateral entry candidates are strongly preferred, even if the interested parties are from out-of-state.
Starting Salary Range: $39,000 – $57,000 DOE / DOQ
