The City of Saint Paul, Alaska, is accepting applications for the position of Police Sergeant (Multidisciplinary). This is a full-time, salaried, contractual position with full benefits including, but not limited to, enrollment in the Alaska Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Supplemental Annuity Plan (SBS-AP), medical insurance, annual leave, sick leave, partially subsidized housing and vehicle.
The Police Sergeant performs general duty commissioned law enforcement work in the protection of life, property and preservation of peace through the enforcement of laws, regulations, and city ordinances. This position supervises jail operations, training activities, the evidence room and records keeping systems. The Police Sergeant schedules and supervises daily activities of police officers, limited commissioned peace officers and civilian employees. He or she works under the supervision of the Public Safety Director/Police Chief. This position involves extensive contact with the public and contact with all entities on Saint Paul Island and other law enforcement agencies. The incumbents serve as “all-hazards” responders, expected to tackle a variety of law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical, search and rescue and emergency management tasks, as assigned. All police officers are expected to obtain and maintain a pre-hospital care provider rating at Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) or higher.
Other routine duties include proactive patrol to preserve the peace, prevent criminal activity, enforcing all Federal, State, and local laws. The Police Sergeant monitors, screens and responds to all calls for service including, but not limited to, disturbances, suspicious activities, citizens assist, and reported criminal activity. He or she completes and reviews written reports, criminal complaints and investigates and prepares criminal cases for prosecution. The position is required to testify in court when necessary. The Police Sergeant responds to all emergency scenes, and situations, and performs all necessary actions to protect the public from danger.

- Education: High School
- Experience: Three Years
High School diploma or equivalent and one year of college in a police related field, or a combination of education and experience. An Associate Degree is preferred. Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) certified, or certifiable within 14 months from date of hire. APSC Intermediate Certificate preferred. Applicant must possess a valid Alaska driver’s license, or have the ability to acquire one within 30 days of hire. Applicant must be in good physical condition, willing to submit to an extensive background investigation, and to pre-employment drug screening. Three years of experience in law enforcement, including two years of full-time law enforcement supervisory and/or training experience.
