Job Description

Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, or his designee, performs traditional law enforcement related duties while focusing on maintaining and improving the quality of life for our community. Duties include the protection life and property, the prevention of crime and apprehension of criminals, animal control and the preservation of peace. EMS and Firefighter training may be required and additional pay allowances are offered for those certifications. The department also provides contractual law enforcement services for the US Forest Service on the island, inside Tongass National Forest. Officers may work scheduled overtime to meet USFS needs per the contract.

Additional Information

Hoonah is a semi-remote village located in Southeast Alaska on Chichagof Island, about 40 air miles west of Juneau. Access to the island is by boat or airplane. Local air carries have several scheduled flights each day to Juneau and Alaska Marine Hwy ferries make the trip multiple times each week. Hoonah is home to approximately 800 full-time residents and is a summer cruise ship destination. Approximately 120,000 cruise ship passengers visit each year. Outdoor acitivites are unlimited and include hunting, fishing, boating, whale watching, brown bear viewing, hiking, snow machining and kayaking.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21
  • Education: High School or Equivalent
  • Experience: Alaska Police Standards Concil Certification, or out of state equivalent preferred
Prior police experience with current Alaska or out of state certification preferred. Must be eligible for and obtain Alaska Police Standards Council certification within 14 months of hire. Must possess a current Alaska Driver’s License. The selection process may include a written test, oral board, individual interview and significant criminal background and character checks. Applicants may also be required to submit to psychological, physical fitness and drug testing as well as a polygraph.
