The City of Mankato is seeking a public safety professional who performs peace officer duties and to do related work as assigned within the Mankato Department of Public Safety Police Service utilizing the community policing philosophy. Police officers work to form partnerships with the community and other service providers, perform problem solving based on community identified issues, and perform community outreach to a diverse citizen constituency. Applicants should have a strong desire to deliver public safety services under this philosophy and articulate their skills in partnership building, problem solving, and community engagement. Both entry level and experienced lateral entry candidates are being sought. Police officers work under the direction of a public safety supervisor.
The hiring process will include, but is not limited to: review of qualifications; departmental orientation; pre-screening interview; professional panel interview; psychological evaluation; drug screen; and background check. Candidates who are selected to move forward in the process will be notified via email of mandatory attendance dates to continue on in the process.
•Must possess an Associate Degree in Police Science/Law Enforcement from an accredited university, college, or vocational technical institute in a program requiring actual classroom instruction and training (excluding programs exclusively by correspondence), or such other education as may be considered equivalent.
•Must be licensed by the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board (Police Officers Standards and Training), or be eligible to be licensed (both academic and skills training completed) by the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board.
•Bachelors Degree in Police Science/Law Enforcement.
•Experience of at least three (3) years working as a full-time patrol officer for a department with a minimum of five (5) full-time officers in a community of at least 4,000 in population utilizing the community policing philosophy.
•Fluency in understanding, reading, speaking, and writing in a language other than English.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
•Must maintain a primary residence within fifteen (15) minutes drive to the contiguous city limits of Mankato driving under normal conditions and posted speed limits within one (1) year of employment.
•Must be a citizen of the United States.
•Must possess a valid Minnesota driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota within thirty (30) days of employment.
•Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation, physical examination, and drug and alcohol testing.
•Must satisfactorily complete a psychological evaluation from a licensed psychologist.
•Must successfully complete the Department of Public Safety Fitness Program and maintain those standards.
•Ability to pass medical standards for self-contained breathing apparatus; and ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus while performing work duties.
•Shall not have been convicted in any state or federal court of any felony. All applicants shall be fingerprinted and a thorough search be made of the fingerprints through local, state, and federal fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
•Must refrain from consuming or utilizing tobacco products on and off duty.
•Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
