Job Description

Under supervision of the Communications Supervisor and sergeant to operate security doors; to control access and movement of inmates, law enforcement personnel and visitors throughout the security area; to monitor and respond to alert alarms; to monitor inmate activities within and outside the housing pods and within the booking/admissions area; maintain communication with deputies through telephone and radio communications and to ensure all Central Control equipment functions properly.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties: Operate various forms of communication equipment including telephone, computer, intercom system and 2-way radio communication system to achieve and maintain contact with law enforcement personnel. Enter incident data into RiMS/InCustody. Record detention center security incidents on detention center video recording system. Check and verify status and identification of visitors to the detention center to ensure admission of only authorized persons. Control access into and throughout the security area of the detention center by use of remote control doors and closed circuit television monitoring systems. Record and document facility inmate admission and release as well as special incident information including those of a security, medical or emergency nature. Respond to emergency alarms and duress signals; make initial announcements of situation and operating door controls at the same time to allow a rapid response to internal emergencies; assign initial response of deputies to incidents. Receive emergent and non-emergent phone calls for service and/or information; route and transfer calls as necessary. Notify proper authorities, agencies and command staff of emergency situations. Maintain all facility security and non-security keys; ensure that key check-out is performed by only authorized personnel specific to that security area or restricted area; maintain a complete and factual key log. Monitor detention center alert, alarm and emergency systems; check for proper function; ensure proper operation at all times. Note problems with equipment; request maintenance as necessary through supervisor or shift commander; maintain awareness of activities on prior shifts and continuing problems or solutions. Enter data into the computer system via computer terminal with information gained from arresting officers, booking officers or other detention staff. Maintain constant surveillance and observation of deputies. Maintain security observation of inmate workers; control the access and movement of inmates within the security area at the direction of deputies. Maintain constant knowledge of identity and location of all non-inmate or staff within the security area of the detention center. Ensure compliance with policy and procedure and post orders by all personnel. Enter all activities/incidents/reports relevant into RIMS/CAD/InCustody System. Maintain arrest files for each inmate with the detention center containing commitment and follow-up documentation regarding each individual incarcerated. Prepare file documentation and other reports. Count, compute and understand monetary intake and release of cash, check or money order. Perform multiple concurrent tasks and manage priorities

Job Requirements

  • Experience: None
Job Related and Essential Qualifications Knowledge of: Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment. Principles and practices used in dealing with the public. Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Basic mathematical principles. Skill to: Learn to operate all Central Control and peripheral equipment safely and effectively. Operate modern office equipment including computers. Ability to: Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned position. Prepare and maintain accurate and complete factual records. Prepare clear and concise reports. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Deal with potential hostility and verbal abuse. Maintain confidentiality of data and information. Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain and foster a positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations including administrative and departmental policies and procedures. Experience and Training Guidelines Some experience in security is desired. High School Diploma or equivalent.
