Job Description

  • The patrol officer job is a uniform position sworn to uphold and enforce all laws and City ordinances, to protect lives and property, and maintain peace and order in the community, including but not limited to, patrolling in squad car, on foot, bicycle, or to control traffic, prevent crime or disturbance of the peace, and arrest violators.
  • The officer will: familiarize and note suspicious persons and establishments and report to superior officer; report hazards; disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings; render first aid at crashes, and investigate causes and results of traffic crashes; direct traffic around fires, parades and other disruptions; warn and arrest persons violating motor vehicle regulations and safe driving practices, monitor traffic to detect stolen vehicles, provide information and assistance to motorists; conduct preliminary investigations, write and file all facts, records, information involved on appropriate reports for possible use in court, and locate, preserve, and collect evidence of crimes and recovered property; appear in court as witness in traffic and criminal cases work; observe buildings and areas to evaluate security needs and to recommend measures to make them less vulnerable to crime, speak to community groups to inform them of crime prevention and security measures; work with neighborhood groups, organizations and individuals to address community concerns and problems to improve the quality of life in our community.

Minimum Requirements:
  • U. S. Citizenship
  • Minimum age on the date of the written examination is 21 years old (or 20 years old with 2 years in law enforcement studies at an accredited college or university). An applicant must have been born on or before June 29, 1992. Refer to 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7 (j), which is included in this packet, for exemptions.
  • Maximum age on the date of the written examination is 34 years old unless previously employed as a Springfield Police Officer. An applicant must have been born after June 30, 1978; however, an applicant with active military service may exceed the age limitation by the number of years served in the military, up to a maximum of 10 years. Refer to ILCS 5/10-1-12, which is included in this packet, for exemptions.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • No visible tattoos (refer to Springfield Police Department Directive 09-152).
  • Birth Certificate
  • High School Diploma, GED (General Education Diploma), or Official High School Transcript that shows a graduation date in a sealed envelope.
  • Must participate in and successfully complete all phases of the testing process.
  • No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors (criminal offenses 720 ILCS 5/ Criminal Code of 1961). A cursory background check will be performed at the time of application. Please refer to Phase 5-Background Investigation for a detailed list.
Lateral Entry Requirements:
  • A candidate must have been employed a minimum of three of the past five years as a full-time police officer in another jurisdiction in which the training and experience either qualifies or would qualify the officer to become certified in the State of Illinois upon written request to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • A candidate must successfully pass the entry-level examination as determined by the City of Springfield Civil Service Commission.
  • A candidate must satisfactory complete all pre-employment investigations and tests including, but not limited, to psychological and medical/drug testing.
  • A candidate‘s maximum age at the time of examination is 34 unless previously employed as a Springfield Police Officer. An applicant must have been born after June 30, 1978. An applicant with active military service may exceed the age limitation by the number of years served in the military, up to a maximum of 10 years. Refer to ILCS 5/10-1-12, which is included in this packet, for exemptions.
  • A candidate may not appear on both the lateral entry and regular entry-level lists.
  • A candidate must provide certification from a previous law enforcement employer indicating that the candidate qualifies for lateral entry at the time of application. A candidate must have obtained three years of service by the date of the written exam.
  • An individual who has been on a lateral entry list for 18 months and has not been certified for hire shall be removed from that list.
