Job Description

Department of Public Safety is Alaska's primary law enforcement agency, whose responsibilities encompass the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. The mandate of the Department is to prevent loss of life and property as a result of illegal or unsafe acts. Department Badge
The Department of Public Safety's largest component is the Division of Alaska State Troopers, which has approximately 350 commissioned members. Troopers are assigned to one of five Detachments or one of two Statewide Bureaus. The Statewide Bureaus are the Alaska Bureau of Investigations (ABI), and the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement (ABADE). The Alaska State Troopers also provide a number of specialized functions including the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), the service of criminal warrants and civil documents, prisoner transportation, and conducting search and rescue missions. Alaska's Wildlife Troopers' core mission is to protect Alaska's Natural Resources through Wildlife Enforcement. Alaska Wildlife Troopers also participate in the overall mission of the Department of Public Safety through enforcement of criminal laws and participation in Search and Rescue operations. Alaska State Troopers (AST) and Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) serve throughout the State, with many personnel being assigned to remote areas of Alaska. Trooper's responsibilities include the enforcement of all criminal and traffic laws, identification and apprehension of violators, and the prevention of crime and traffic violations. Troopers protect Alaska's fish and wildlife resources through the enforcement of laws and regulations governing use of the natural resources within Alaska and its adjacent waters.

  • The base monthly salary for a State Trooper Recruit varies based on geographic location.
Starting Salary for Trooper Recruits are as follows:
  • State Trooper Recruit: $26.16 per hour/$4,535.00 per month
  • State Trooper Recruit with a 4 year college degree: $27.14 per hour/$4,705.00 per month
Starting Salary for State Trooper Laterals (certified law enforcement officers with at least one year of qualified experience) are as follows:
  • State Trooper Lateral: $30.31 per hour/$5,254.00 per month
  • State Trooper Lateral with a 4 year college degree: $31.45 per hour/$5,451.00 per month

The Alaska Department of Public Safety is currently hiring for entry level Alaska State Trooper/Wildlife Trooper Recruit and out of state lateral hires. Lateral hire:
State Trooper Lateral is distinguished from State Trooper Recruit by having completed an acceptable basic law enforcement training program. To qualify you must possess an active police certification and at least one year of patrol experience as a full time police officer in a certified State or Municipal law enforcement agency. Special Agents who have successfully completed their prospective training academy and at least one year of law enforcement experience with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) are eligible for Lateral Hire. State Trooper Laterals, when hired, must complete a limited course of instruction focused on aspects of law enforcement specific to the State of Alaska and the Department of Public Safety.
