Job Description

The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office maintains a Resident Deputy post for the Surprise Valley community that has the sparsely populated areas of Fort Bidwell, Lake City, Cedarville, and Eagleville with a total population of about 2000 citizens in Surprise Valley. The main office and jail are in the county seat of Alturas California. Applicants should be aware that positions are filled as needed, and only those applicants who have an appeal for living in remote or low populated areas need apply. Modoc County Residents enjoy an abundance of outdoor activities, affordable housing, and a low cost of living.

SALARY RANGE: Entry Level Base Salary is $2801.00 a month. (Negotiable with documented experience). Monthly salary excluding INCENTIVE PAY which may include, but is not limited to;
  • Education incentive 10%
  • Shift differential pay 7%
  • On call pay 8.5%
  • Resident Deputy pay 15%
  • Take Home Vehicle.
  • $900.00 annual uniform allowance.
  • OVERTIME PAID OR COMP TIME.
  • Longevity Pay after Top Step, 5% every three years.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21
  • Education: HS/GED
  • Experience: LATERAL
PROCESS: Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview and ride-along. Following successful completion of the oral interview, a background investigation will be completed on the top candidates. All applicants who successfully complete the background investigation will then be scheduled for a psychological examination. In addition, a fit for duty POST medical examination and a POST physical fitness test will be completed. Successful completion of all phases of the County’s testing process is required. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Have successfully completed (at any time) a California POST Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy (or state equivalent) and have a minimum five (5) years or more experience as a sworn peace officer with a law enforcement agency with less than a three (3) year lap in service, and be eligible for appointment as a Peace Officer under Section 830.1 PC. You must submit a copy of your Basic POST Certificate or other documentation to substantiate your eligibility. Candidates must meet ALL California P.O.S.T. standards for a Deputy Sheriff www.post.ca.gov/overview-selection-standards.aspx Candidates must possess a valid California Drivers License as well as be free from pending civil litigation or pending departmental discipline.
