Job Description

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission seeks a qualified Internal Investigator to join its police department. The Internal Investigator conducts criminal investigations of crimes occurring on Commission property and investigations aimed at the discovery of employee misconduct that may directly affect the Commission. Job duties include:
  • Conducts complex investigations of crimes occurring on Commission property and investigations involving allegations of Commission employee misconduct;
  • Prepares comprehensive investigative reports in support of findings;
  • Conducts complex law enforcement internal investigations in accordance with the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights and other applicable laws;
  • Testifies in the courts of the State of Maryland, federal court, and in administrative hearings;
  • Identifies, collects and documents evidence and facilitates forensic processing and examination of evidence;
  • Plans, initiates, and participates in tactical operations;
  • Formulates and designs report forms for use by the Security and Safety Services Group/WSSC Police Department personnel;
  • Formulates and designs administrative forms for use by the Security and Safety Services Group/WSSC Police Department management;
  • Reviews proposed legislation and comments both verbally and in writing;
  • Researches, develops, and assists in the implementation of administrative procedures affecting the WSSC Police Department.
  • Researches, formulates, and prepares staff studies involving law enforcement subject matter;
  • Plans, initiates, and participates in tactical operations;
  • Serves civil process for other units of the WSSC;
  • Maintains a current working knowledge of civil and criminal laws and procedures and the rules of evidence;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Additional Information

  • Maintains standby status during non-working hours;
  • Work is performed in both the field and in an office environment;
  • The Investigator performs law enforcement related duties which may include, but are not limited to, physical exertion, exposure to all degrees of weather, variable working hours, and response to high risk incidents.

Job Requirements

  • Age: : 18+
  • Education: : High School diploma
  • Experience: : 6+ years certified officer in Maryland; 4+ years police investigations experience
  • 6+ years law enforcement experience as a police officer in the State of Maryland (MPTC certified), including 4+ years experience in the field of police investigations.
  • Currently certified or the ability to be re-certified by the Maryland Police Training Commission as a police officer in the State of Maryland;
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a WSSC driver’s permit;
  • Must pass a law enforcement-level background check.
  • Completion of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission Financial Disclosure Statement within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter.
