Job Description

The City of Folly Beach is accepting applications for a Corporal. Job duties:
  • Patrols the city
  • Supervises and instructs police officers in performance of their duties
  • Inspects police officers for appearance and equipment under the direction of the supervising sergeant
  • Performs in-service training
  • Assists in the evaluation of personnel
  • Performs field training on new hires and aids in the completion of the department’s training program
  • Prepares various reports
  • Serves as an instructor within the agency
  • Responsible for departmental programs as designated by the chief
  • Shares on-call status with the sergeant
  • Responds to serious crimes and other incidents
  • Checks and reviews reports of daily activities and other reports of police officers
  • Issues specific instruction and assignments at the scene of activities
  • Covers vacant shifts as required by the sergeants
Salary range: $37,500 - $42,300 How to apply: Deadline: Position open until filled

Additional Information

    Qualifications:
    • Minimum of three years of experience as a patrol officer, preferably supplemented by a two-year degree in criminal justice or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
    • Must be a graduate of a Criminal Justice Academy with 500 hours of in-service training or have been waived or eligible for such a waiver by the academy board.
    • Must have knowledge, skills and abilities
    • Must have considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department
    • Must have working knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws and local ordinances
    • Must have working knowledge of the geography of the city
    • Must have working knowledge of first aid principles and skills in their application
    • Must have working knowledge of modern police methods and procedures with emphasis on training technique
    • Ability to understand and execute both oral and written directions
    • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive written reports
    • Ability to assign, instruct and review the work of subordinates
    • Ability to develop effective working relationships with other public safety personnel
    • Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public
    • Ability and skill in the use of firearms
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
    • Ability to speak effectively before groups of residents and in a courtroom situation
    • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume
    • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
    • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
    • Regularly works in outside weather conditions
    • Works near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places and with explosives
    • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation and vibration
    • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud
