Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Performs law enforcement and crime prevention work. As a sworn position, enforces federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances. Performs a variety of duties. The work in this class involves considerable contact with a wide range of individuals, as well as various federal, state and local agencies, businesses and local residents. Must be able to successfully pass standards as set by the Oregon Board of Police Standards and Training. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    a) Provides patrol to the residential and business community within the City of Troutdale. b) Provides law enforcement applicable to traffic and criminal laws. c) Makes arrests, issues citations and warnings where applicable community/state/federal law(s) have been violated. d) Prepares case records and reports by normal written standards and may be requested to utilize computer laptop equipment to perform these functions. e) Participates in the prosecution of cases in court (requires ability to testify in an open forum in a verbally distinguishable manner.) f) Responds to and assists general public by providing requested information and directions. g) Works flexible hours and shifts (minimum 16 hours per month required). h) Observes and reports road conditions, hazards, potential crime and traffic problems. i) May be required to interact physically with suspects or prisoners and may be assigned to perform special projects. j) Must develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIEINCE: Graduation from high school or equivalent education. Previous experience in law enforcement and/or college level law enforcement course work is desirable but not required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES Valid driver's license; must have graduated for a BPST certified Reserve Academy; must be 21 years of age at time of employment. Successfully complete: Physical agility testing, background investigation, psychological testing and oral/written interviews. Such examinations and/or testing will be required as a condition of employment. Must be able to be certified by the Firearms Instructor to carry a firearm by qualifying with a minimum score of 90.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are primarily performed on patrol in an assigned geographical area where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies, employee risks physical hazard from violent, aggressive, and hostile people, a variety of weapons, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and crime scenes. Physical exertion is required to climb stairs, go over walls, run, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas and sit for long period of time during surveillance. Physical effort is required to lift materials, equipment and persons exceeding 50 lbs., and subdue combative persons.
