Job Description

  • Patrols City streets
  • Responds to calls for police assistance or service
  • Directs traffic where needed
  • Provides emergency assistance to ill or injured citizens
  • Arrests law violators
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings
  • Maintains custody of prisoners
  • Makes reports
  • Conducts initial investigation of alleged criminal conduct
  • Maintains order in crowds
  • Advises public on laws in force
  • Enforces traffic laws, issues citations where indicated
  • Investigates suspicious persons or activities
  • Records, stores, and is responsible for evidence for future court cases, and lost items that have been found and turned in by members of the general public
  • Attends roll-calls
  • Attends training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices; Attends work regularly at the designated place and time

  • Age: : 18
  • Education: : High School or equivalent GED
  • Experience: : none required

  • be 18 years old by date of written exam
  • not have more than a maximum deviation of 20/100 uncorrected in each
  • eye, correctable to 20/20 with contacts or glasses
  • have normal color vision
  • have normal hearing in each ear
  • be a graduate of an accredited high school or possess GED (2-year law enforcement degree or closely related field preferred)
  • be a citizen of the U.S. and resident of the state of Iowa (or intend to become a resident upon employment)
  • live within 50 miles of the city limits
  • be able to speak, read and write the English language
  • not be addicted to alcohol or drugs
  • be of good moral character
  • not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude (income tax evasion, perjury, assault, domestic abuse, theft, indecentexposure, sex crimes, conspiracy to commit a crime, etc.)
  • have a valid Iowa driver’s or chauffeur's license at the time of employment
  • attain 70% in each section of written exam.The four sections are:
    1. Basic arithmetic
    2. Reading comprehension
    3. Identifying errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling
    4. Writing skills
  • complete a battery of four physical qualification tests
    1. Sit and reach
    2. 1 minute sit-up
    3. 1 minute push-up
    4. 1.5 mile run
Selection Process Must:
  • voluntarily submit to a polygraph exam
  • satisfactorily complete psychological testing
  • participate in an oral interview held by hiring authority
  • complete required testing performed by City nurse to include health and physical assessment
  • be examined by physician to determine if free from physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect performance of law enforcement related activities
