Under the supervision of the Captain, the Lieutenant is a non-exempt position which performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Geary County. The lieutenant is responsible for supervising a shift of Patrol Deputy Sheriff/Firefighters. Work involves patrolling county areas, enforcing all federal, state and local laws and ordinances, securing compliance with traffic violations and making investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in handling emergencies. The Patrol Captain supervises the work of sergeants in enforcing law enforcement in the county.

Lieutenant – Road Patrol: Must be certified deputy with a minimum of 3 years law enforcement supervisory experience. This is a supervisory position leading a shift of four other officers including a Sergeant and three deputies. Pay dependent upon qualifications with credit given for years of law enforcement certification.
