CITY OF EVANS EMPLOYMENT ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION: POLICE OFFICER DEPARTMENT: POLICE REQUISITION: 14-21 STATUS: FULL-TIME/NON-EXEMPT STARTING SALARY: $22.03/HOUR - $28.70/HOUR DOQ WORK SCHEDULE: VARIES OPENING DATE: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2014 CLOSING DATE: FRIDAY, MAY 16 AT 5:00 PM SUMMARY: Enforces federal, state and municipal laws, investigates crime, makes arrests, assists the general public, completes written reports of activities, participates in community-oriented policing strategies and problem solving activities, and testifies in court. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Preventive patrol of assigned areas; responds to and handles calls for police service; enforces state and municipal traffic and criminal laws; investigates criminal activity; types computerized police reports; makes arrests when appropriate; assists the general public; participates in community problem solving with area residents; mediates disputes between citizens; facilitates community meetings; testifies in criminal court proceedings; attends scheduled training; works rotating shift schedules; performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: Requires high school diploma or equivalent; 21 years of age or older; possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license and insurable under the City’s policy; current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification or possession of Colorado P.O.S.T. certification prior to September 29, 2014 or possession of a Letter of Conditional Peace Officer Authority prior to September 29, 2014; or a certified officer in another state & eligible for POST certification in Colorado by September 29, 2014; must be a United States citizen; knowledge of police practices, procedures, and equipment; skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing with various audiences; ability to learn new concepts and methods of law enforcement; ability to qualify quarterly with department approved firearms; ability to safely drive a police car; ability to effect the physical arrest of a violent offender; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency/high stress situations; ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees; ability to interact with the public in a tactful and courteous manner; ability to work in a team environment or independently; ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment and software including word processing, data base management, and electronic mail; no illegal drug use within the last 5 years, including marijuana; and no arrests/convictions for any felony crimes or crimes involving moral turpitude. An Associate’s degree or two years of college coursework is desired. Spanish/English bilingual skills highly desirable.
