Job Description

Position Purpose Provides oversight and leadership to the Communications Specialists and to all functions in the Police Communications Center to ensure an effective flow of communications between the general public requesting police service and police employees. Provide 24-hour emergency and non-emergency dispatch services as required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE - Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1.  Perform functions of a Communications Specialist as needed     a.  Maintain high level of customer service skills

    b. Maintain ability to multi task/perform more than one activity at a time in a high stress, emergency response environment

    c. Possess advanced computer skills and an in depth knowledge of NCIC and CCIC standards.

    d. Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels         of personnel within the City, the general public and other agencies in a positive and cooperative manner

2.  Supervise and manage Communications personnel     a.  Demonstrate leadership abilities, motivating staff and enhancing overall performance.

    b. Oversee first line Communications employees, including setting work schedules, reviewing and directing training activities,         reviewing and approving personnel transactions and providing performance feedback and evaluations.

    c. Receive and address citizen compliments and complaints directed towards staff

    d. Facilitate communication and positive interaction to maintain an effective working relationships between Dispatch and Patrol         personnel.

3.  Communications Administration     a. Review and manage enhanced 911 Database and Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) updates and corrections.

    b. Reproduce audio and video recordings for use by courts, citizens and investigations.

    c. Review and re-write formal procedures and operating manuals as necessary, participating in strategic planning and         accreditation activities.

    d. Review budget and manage available funds for supplies, equipment, overtime, and training.

4.  Equipment management and maintenance     a. Ensure proper equipment operation by performing minor maintenance and repairs, contacting outside vendors for         major repairs.

    b. Perform maintenance on computer aided dispatch system database records and mapping.

    c. Research and recommend purchases that maintain technology and equipment in accordance with established standards.

Working Environment/Physical Activities: Physical effort generally not required.  Work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires the use of a headset for radio and telephone communications.   Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule which may involve irregular hours at short notice. 

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21 years or older
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred (not required)
  • Experience: 4 years

Minimum Education or Formal Training and Experience:

High school diploma or GED plus four (4) years emergency dispatch or similar experience including two (2) years of experience in a leadership position in a high stress environment. 

 Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Must be able to work Days, Nights, Weekends and/or Holidays.
