Kent is the sixth largest city in Washington State with a population of approximately 120,000 and covers a geographic area of 34 square miles. The Kent Police Department is nationally accredited by the Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs (WASPC). WASPC accreditation provides a strong basis for effective law enforcement and safety education policies and procedures. The department staffing consists of 144 sworn officers, 49 full-time, and 2 part-time civilian personnel as well as an active volunteer program. The Kent Police Department offers a wide variety of opportunities for promotion/advancement within the agency. Specialty assignments include: VSRT (SWAT), VCDU (Riot team), K9, Detectives, Special Investigations Unit, Special Operations Unit (bikes and boat), Neighborhood Response Team, Traffic, Negotiator, and FTO. We also maintain a technically and tactically proficient training cadre for our EVOC, Defensive Tactics, and Firearms programs. We average about 90,000 dispatched calls and 17,000 case reports per year.

Lateral officers receive a starting pay of $4,854 - $6,321 depending on experience. Front-loading of vacation time and sick leave is negotiable.
Many of our specialty assignments receive a premium pay of an additional 3.5%. Those specialties include: Detectives, SIU, SOU, Traffic, K9, VSRT, Negotiators, Recruiters, and Administrative Sergeant. FTO’s and officers assigned full time to the Criminal Justice Training Center receive a premium pay of an additional 6%.

The department covers all uniform and equipment items as well as training costs.
We work a seniority based 4/10 schedule with six week rotations for weekdays/weekends off.
