Job Description

Under the supervision of the police sergeant or other designated supervisor, the cadet performs duties related to the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of Ottawa.  Cadets must be enrolled as full-time college students at Neosho County Community College (NCCC), working part-time to experience exposure to and understanding of police work performed in a municipal police department, performing a variety of routine and progressively more advanced tasks in an apprenticeship program with close direction and supervision to carry out their assignments in accordance with established operating procedures. If hired, the Cadet will also attend NCCC on a full scholarship for two years.

Hours:                        Normally, Monday-Friday during regular business hours, but when school is in session-duty hours will vary depending on the cadet’s NCCC class schedule, may work other hours and days when school is not in session.  Some overtime may be required.

Additional Information:

            Applicant must comply with residency requirement which states:  Regular part-time and regular full-time employees shall, within one year of date of hire, establish and maintain residency within Franklin County or within a driving distance of 35 miles of the Ottawa City Hall, AND within the state of Kansas.

Applicant must be 17-21 years of age but must have reached his or her 18th birthday at the time of hire, but not their 21st birthday, a U.S. citizen, possess a valid Driver’s License, and be insurable by the City’s insurance carrier.  A high school diploma or GED is required.  Applicants considered for hire must successfully complete a preliminary background check, written entrance exam, physical agility testing, and an oral panel interview.  Applicants recommended for further consideration will be required to complete an extensive background check and polygraph exam.  Applicants recommended for hire will be required to successfully complete a post offer drug screen, psychological and physical exams.

           

Requires the ability to drive a motorized vehicle.  Vision correctable to 20/20 for each eye; individuals with vision worse than 20/40 may be required to wear vision correction and retention devices.  Requires mobility and flexibility of body, manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination adequate to operate equipment as necessary. 

            Knowledge of criminal and related federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, and police techniques.  The ability to operate radio equipment, firearms, computers and other related equipment.  Must be able to remain calm and thoughtful in highly stressful situations. Must be able to communicate in person, over the phone, and over the radio with the public, police department employees and dispatchers.  Must be able to speak, hear, visually read, and write proficiently in English.  The ability to work courteously and establish successful working relationships with entities, employees, City officials, businesses and the public, and use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision-making.

Cadets must be enrolled as full-time college students at Neosho County Community College (NCCC) as a full time student, apply for financial aid prior to the written test date, maintain a 2.5 grade point average (GPA).
