Job Description

Level l: This is the entry level within the District Attorney's Investigator series. Incumbents perform investigative tasks according to established procedure. Level ll: This is a journey level within the District Attorney Investigator series. Incumbents are expected to carry out independent assignments according to established procedure.Level lll: This classification differs from the District Attorney's Investigator l and ll classifications in that it performs lead level duties or specialist investigative functions.

Employment Standards:

Level l: Possession of a valid Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate AND three (3) year of law enforcement experience in a City, County, State or Federal law enforcement agency.

Level ll: Possession of a valid Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate AND five (5) years of law enforcement experience as a peace officer working for a state, local or federal law enforcement agency as defined under California Penal Code 830.1, two (2) years of which must include experience conducting criminal investigations. At least one (1) year of investigative experience must be within the past three (3) years OR two (2) years of experience as a District Attorney’s Investigator I in the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Level lll: Possession of a POST Intermediate Certificate AND seven (7) years of law enforcement experience as a peace officer working for a state, local or federal law enforcement agency as defined under California Penal Code 830.1, three (3) years of which must include conducting full-time criminal investigation experience. At least one (1) year of investigative experience must be within the past three (3) years OR two (2) years of experience as a District Attorney’s Investigator II in the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

All Levels l/ll/lll: Qualifying federal law enforcement experience must include a federal law enforcement academy of 10 weeks or longer. Applicants must meet all requirements for peace officer status that are mandated by the California Government Code and Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Regulations for the class of Investigator.

Additionan Information

License: Possession of a valid unrestricted California Driver’s license.

Knowledge of: the substantive and procedural California criminal law; laws of arrest, search and seizure, rules of evidence, admissibility of confessions and statements of witnesses; care and use of firearms.
Ability to: observe and remember names, faces and situations; to use good judgment in situations specific to the position of District Attorney Investigator; to read and comprehend legal material; adopt quick effective courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; write clear concise reports; understand and follow oral and written directions; use a computer to perform job related duties.
