Job Description

This is responsible law enforcement work for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City of Blackwell and other jurisdictions.

The Blackwell Police Department patrols designated areas of the City to preserve law and order, and to prevent the commission of crime.  Duties also include responding to general public service calls, investigating misdemeanor and felony complaints, and enforcing state and municipal traffic ordinances.  An officer must be able to maintain good working relationships with citizens and actively promote police / community relations.  The officer must act as a first responder to emergency medical incidents, render appropriate first aid and assist emergency medical technicians as needed.  An officer will be required to do a variety of technical and administrative functions that serve the public and the police department.  An element of danger is associated with the position and an officer will be subjected to extreme, adverse, and stressful conditions.  Work is supervised, but officers must be able to function independently for most of the workday.

     The City of Blackwell would like to extend an invitation to all interested candidates to apply for the position of police officer.  Blackwell is located in western Kay County at the crossroads of the I-35 corridor and State Highway 11.  Blackwell's population is 7,100 and is equidistant from Tulsa and Oklahoma City.  Wichita, Kansas is only a short drive to the north.

     Certified officers start out at $34,000 per year plus overtime pay.  Your experience may qualify you for a $1000.00 bonus after you complete the probationary period.  The City of Blackwell furnishes all officers equipment except boots.  Officers have opportunity for monthly incentive pay when performing certain extra duties.  Officers receive ten days paid vacation and ten days paid holiday leave per year.  Officers are able to accrue comp time and receive accrued sick time at a rate of one day per month.  The City of Blackwell also gives officers $900.00 a year clothing allowance and uniforms are dry cleaned and pressed at the city’s expense.

     The Blackwell Police Department is staffed with sixteen officers.  Cleet certification is NOT required but is preferred, all applications will be considered.  The City of Blackwell provides officers health insurance.  Dental, vision, and life insurance is offered.  Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, clean criminal background, pass an extensive background check, and possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license and high school diploma or GED. Applicants must be able to pass the Oklahoma Police Pension physical.
