Job Description

Police officers assist the Grand Rapids community by protecting life and property, enforcing the law, and working with citizens to address neighborhood problems related to crime and disorder.Patrols a designated area of the city on foot, bicycle, and/or in a patrol car to detect and deter criminal activity, disorderly conduct and traffic violations. Preserve the peace at public gatherings and neighborhood disputes.Responds to calls for service relating to traffic incidents, domestic disputes, reports of criminal activity, lost or missing persons, public services duties, citizen assistance or other incidents and taking the appropriate action. Communicates important information to fellow officers, dispatchers and other agencies via radio, computer and other methods while responding to calls for service.Pursues, apprehends and arrests criminal offenders. Uses physical force, handcuffs and other restraints in accordance with department policy.Conducts prisoner transfers and processing which may include searches of persons, assisting in the execution of judicial warrants for seizure of blood or other body fluids, and removal of personal possessions for safety or evidentiary purposes.Performs lawful searches of people, vehicles, buildings and other personal property. Seizes and processes evidence in accordance with departmental policy. Serves criminal warrants.Enforces criminal law, local ordinances, and traffic regulations by issuing traffic or misdemeanor citations, verbal warnings, or taking the offender into custody.Provides rescue functions and assistance to other agencies at accidents, emergencies and disasters, administering medical first-aid when necessary.Conducts a thorough investigation of all criminal offenses and other incidents within area of assignment and scope of authority. Candidates must qualify in each step of the process in order to proceed to the next step.1. Meet all basic qualifications which include:• Citizen of the United States• Minimum Age of Eighteen (18)• Proof of High School graduation or a General Educational Development (GED) Certificate• Possession of a Valid State of Michigan Driver's License• Be licensed or eligible for licensing by MCOLES as of November 21, 2014• Meet all MCOLES Standards, including good moral character as defined by MCOLES standards, 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and the absence of color blindness.2. Complete the online application and attach it to the Police Officer job posting on the City of Grand Rapids website at www.grcity.us/humanresources and submit to the Human Resources Department as directed via NEOGOV to be eligible for consideration.  THE FINAL GROUP OF APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE BY 11:59 PM ON July 25, 2014 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.  3. Applicants attending the meeting will receive instructions on how to complete the Background Questionnaire which MUST be thoroughly completed and returned to the Police Department Training Bureau within 7 days.  Deadlines for returning the packet will be announced at the Meeting and strictly adhered to.7. Pass Administrative Review of Background Questionnaire.8. Pass the City of Grand Rapids oral board examination.9. *Pass the Personal History (Background) Investigation conducted by the City of Grand Rapids Police Department.10. *Pass an evaluation of physical and mental health conducted by City-designated, qualified medical/psychological persons.OUT OF STATE CERTIFIED OFFICERS: Please contact the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) at (517)322-1417 to determine your eligibility and available dates for the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.  This program MUST be completed prior to November 21, 2014. ***NOTE:  THE EMPCO TEST MUST ALSO BE COMPLETED BY JULY 25, 2014****These requirements are mandated by the State of Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, Lansing, Michigan (517)322-1417.
