The School Liaison K9 Deputy will provide proactive security and school-based law enforcement in and around schools within a school district. K-9 unit Deputies, before all else, are law enforcement agents.Duties include, but are not limited to patrolling school campuses, assisting school administrators with enforcement of student codes of conduct, criminal investigation, arrest of offenders, traffic law enforcement and direction, issuance of citations, and interaction with the public through civic and community service events and organizations. The School Liaison K9 Deputy will also offer courtroom testimony, assist other public service entities and citizens and cross-train in other divisions and perform other duties as assigned. In addition to these duties, the K-9 Deputy is responsible for training and caring for his/her dog, who serves as a partner to the K-9 Deputy.
Successful applicants must:
Ø Be able to work under adverse conditions and during unusual hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Ø Speak, read, and write the English language in a clear and understandable fashion.
Ø Possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
Ø Hold a Basic Peace Officer proficiency certification through TCOLE.
Ø Employed as a Texas Peace Officer for at least the past (24) consecutive months.
Ø Currently and successfully qualified with a duty firearm.
Ø Have no Disciplinary actions in the last (12) months.
Ø Knowledge of the OSSI computer system, RMS and other related systems.
Ø Pass a background review and interview board.
Ø Successfully complete the Field Training Program and twelve month (12) probation period.
Ø Successfully complete Patrol Procedures and 40 Hour Ride Along in first (12) months of working in SLO Division.
Ø Successfully complete a training and certification course with the K9.
Ø Successfully complete physical agility test.

Assignment to vacant positions, as available, shall be made on a conditional basis pending successful completion of a required field training program. Should an applicant not successfully complete field training the applicant may be afforded an opportunity to be reassigned to a vacancy within the Sheriff’s Office for which the applicant is qualified. Applicants should be aware that School Liaison Officer (SLO) positions are funded through contract(s) with local school districts. While relationships such as those involving SLO’s have historically been quite sound, applicants are hereby notified that SLO assignments, along with salary, benefits (real or perceived), perquisites of the job, rank, or any other advantages offered by this position may expire when and if contracts are not continued. Personnel assigned to SLO positions serve at the will of the Sheriff and the school district. The school district may, at their discretion, request to have a school liaison officer replaced at any time, with or without cause. While reasonable efforts to provide assignees preferential transfer to a vacancy within the agency for which the person is qualified, no promise is made to any current employee that may transfer to this position that they will return to their previously assigned positions.
