Job Description

Performs a full range of Law Enforcement duties to protect life and property through the enforcement of State and Federal Laws by:

  • Investigating motor vehicle crashes, crimes against property, and violent crimes
  • Performs traffic control duties and traffic code enforcement to include issuing citations
  • Conducts crime prevention activities to include community events
  • Operating vehicles in routine and emergency situations
  • Receiving training in report preparation and other general police paperwork
  • Testify in court in relation to all cases handled
  • Must learn how to use specialized equipment, such as firearms,communication equipment, and computers
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, other law enforcement, and the general public
  • Ability to meet deadlines with strict time constraints
  • Under close supervision, Deputies perform routine residential and commercial patrols in rural and urban areas of Santa Fe County

Additional Information

  • Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions
  • May be subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and/or animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, enviromental allergens, gases and fumes, and any other injuries that could be associated with your duties as a Deputy Sheriff
  • May require demanding physical exertion under vigorous and unusual conditions
  • Irregular work hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duty may be required

Salary Information (Detailed):

  • Deputy Cadet: Starts at $17.50
  • Deputy I (After 1 year): $19.00-$19.19
  • Deputy II: (Upon completion of 1 year of service as a Deputy I or a lateral Deputy): $20.50-$21.12
  • Deputy III: $23.00-$26.70
  • Corporal (Supervisor): $25.30-$30.26
  • Sergeant (Supervisor): $28.38-$33.28

* Differential pay for shifts: 5% for swing shift (2:00pm-10:00pm), 7.5% for split shifts, and 10% for graveyard shift (10:00pm-6:00am) and incentive pay for specialty divisions.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21yrs old (Cadet) & Lateral- No Restrict
  • Education: HS Diploma or Equivelent
  • Experience: None (Cadet) & Credit up to 5yrs (Lateral)
  • Must have a record clear of any felony convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude
  • Must have a good driving record. Must possess a valid class D New Mexico drivers license. If an applicant currently possesses an out of state driver's license he/she must obtain a New Mexico driver's license within six (6) weeks after graduating the NMDPS Academy or gaining lateral employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age upon completion of the NMDPS Academy
  • Must be a United States citizen and establish New Mexico residency within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must successfully pass, a written examination (Lateral and cadet), a series of physical agility tests (Cadet only), an oral interview, a complete background investigation, a pyschological examination as to whether the canidate is free of any mental or emotional condition which might adversely affect performance (Cadet and Out of State Lateral- In State Certified Lateral does not need a psychological exam).
  • The last phase is the Sheriff or his designee's approval, only if the aplicant can pass ALL of the above phases
