Job Description

The City of Cheyenne will be testing for Entry Level and Lateral positions w/ the Cheyenne Police Department August 28th and 29th, accepting applications until 5:00PM, Tuesday, August 26th, 2014.  Entry Level Applicants who are hired will attend a 13-week Peace Officer Basic at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, Douglas, WY; Laterals will attend a 2-week Criminal Law course; both Entry and Laterals will be required to complete the department’s 14-week Field Training Program (FTO Training), finishing out probation at the successful conclusion of 18 months of employment from date of hire. Laterals meeting criteria found on the department’s website may receive a raise in pay grade after six months satisfactory employment. Located in the far southeast corner of the State, serving the State Capitol population of 60,000 people, sitting at just over 6,000 feet elevation, our work involves responsibility for community protection of life and property, crime prevention, law enforcement and arrest, assigned patrol duties, traffic control, report processing, public relations contacts, and other special police related assignments.

A second trip to Cheyenne for Entry Level and Lateral Applicants anticipated in late October for the Chief’s Interview; those prospective candidates who receive a Conditional Offer of Employment will immediately go through additional testing.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21 at time of appointment
  • Education: High School diploma or GED equivilant
  • Experience: none required
  • US citizen
  • High School diploma or GED Equivalent
  • 21 yoa at time of hire
  • No felony or Domestic Violence convictions
  • Pass entry PT - to meet the 40th percentile listed on pp. 3 & 4 of Application Packet
  • (Cheyenne sits at 6,000 feet elevation)
  • Meet Driving /Drug Criteria listed on pp. 12 & 13 of Application Packet found on web site
  • After passing the Oral Board applicants must complete a thorough Background Investigation; those in the running for a position will then be required to complete the following: a Chief’s Interview, polygraph; psychological evaluation; and a medical exam/drug screen; for Lateral applicants a home/department site visit will be conducted
  • Must reside in Laramie County upon hire.
